Are you sure there are no shortcuts?

keep-calm-and-be-heard-not-herdLast week I wrote about what it was that makes some succeed online, and some fail. I touched on different points….

Of all the three I believe that possessing an iron clad, efficacious, infallible expertise (aka credibility) is by far the most important of them all.

And here is why.

We work in an incredibly crowded marketplace. A place where even when we have something worthwhile to say, our discourse will most likely get drowned in the millions of other voices shouting for attention.

Most of us have no letters after our names. Even if we did they would carry no meaning here. Our credibility is the only asset which we have. Our experience – what we did, how we did it, when and why – are the lingua franca of our followers…our Tribes as Seth Godin calls them. Without this we are quite simply irrelevant. Dead.

So how do we get heard?

What’s the secret?

In 2008 Malcolm Gladwell wrote a book called Outliers: The Story of Success, a runaway eleven week New York Times Best Seller. In the book Gladwell claims that any skill, from extreme wealth to musical virtuosity, can be taught during 10,000 hours of practice.

10,000 hours.

Three years of solid 12 hour work days. Sweat, blood and tears.

Indeed, this is the sort of Expertise which our followers would expect from us. The genuine article, “been there done that” integrity that cannot be faked.Yea.

Do we really need to slave away 12 hours a day for 3 years in order to write a successful blog?

More importantly, have all those who succeeded online perfected their skills for 10,000 hours before becoming successful?

I don’t think so.

But let me clarify.

Some would, and some won’t.

I read recently that Michael Hyatt, a top 10 most influential blogger and the author of another runaway New York Times Best Seller  Platform: Get Noticed in a Noisy World, took 4 years to get 1,000 unique visitors to his website. (he now has over 400,000 subscribers).

4 years!

I know others who get there in 4 months.

How?  What is the secret?

I won’t beat around the bush. I am about to release a video product about precisely this topic. And I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised at what you are about to see. If you are looking for a short cut to getting your name out there on the best footing possible, than you may have just hit the jackpot.

This will be published next week.

However if you want to get stuck into something that is quite compelling in the meantime,I thoroughly recommend Ed Akehurst’s You Are The Expert: Developing Ultimate Credibility which you can access here.
